El
Yelmo celebrates their 9th International Festival: July 3 to 6
Posted:
May 8th, 2008
The
popular International Air Festival of El Yelmo, FIA 2009 (Cortijos
Nuevos, Jaen, Andalusia) –the oldest paragliding festival
in Spain- will keep the successful line started last year, which
gives a central role to the participating pilots: with free registration,
gifts, flying, acrobatic shows, a festival of films related to flying,
a fair, talks and workshops, and plenty of fun.
New
in this 9th edition of the FIA is the 4-days duration,
starting on Thursday evening with the opening of the fair and the
first night of cinema and concerts. Also new is the first Mountain-and-Paragliding
race that will take the contestants all the way to the
top of El Yelmo mountain by foot to then take-off using lightweight
paragliders provided by an international manufacturer. Another competition
to be held during the festival is the 1st Spanish Freestyle Paramotor
Open that will be a qualifying event for the World Air Games of
Turin 2009, with eye-catching ground tasks at a special area open
to the public.
In
the program there’s the night show of paramotor and fantasy
that Paraddax (also known as the "European Paramotor
Team") will put up; the homecoming of the SAT
team; BASE jump and skydiving by the Red Bull team
and the parachutists of the Army; or the RACE aerobatic airplanes.
Like in previous years, there will be tandem paraglider flights
and helicopter flights from the site.
Born
in 1999 as ‘Air Cinema Festival’, El
Yelmo still keeps this section dedicated to productions featuring
the air and flying as protagonists, which will by screened every
night on the main stage of the FIA and in the Day Cinema, inside
the Fair. Those interested in video making will have the chance
to participate in free workshops about edition during mornings and
evenings.
The
air-conned tent of the Fair will be again the place where
to take shelter from the Andalusian heat and to see the new products
presented by vendors. Inside there will be other activities, like
technical talks about, for example, the X-Alps competition
by Ramon Morillas, or Meteorology.
The
memorable nights of the FIA will count this year with batucadas,
DJs sessions and concerts with popular bands. The Festival’s
goal is that we all enjoy the most playful and visual side of paragliding
on a particularly fun weekend.
The
fourth edition of the Paragliding Festival of Los Realejos confirmed
its position as one of the greatest shows of acrobatic paragliding
of the moment, perhaps only contested by the Icare Cup (France).
With world-class experts in that discipline displaying their abilities
over the beach of El Socorro, on the north of Tenerife (Canary,
Spain), the 4 days of Flypa 08 were a big aerial party –
in spite of unfavourable conditions for flying due to a heat wave
that left high stability until Saturday. Over two hundred pilots
had to exercise patience and satisfy their thirst for flying with
the smooth glide from Izaña (+2000m) in the mornings, and
wait for better conditions to fly from La Corona –which
this year barely offered top-to-bottoms from Thursday to Saturday.
Impressive
performances of the Aerodyne team, the girls
Seiko Fukuoka and Maeva Giacometti, the
Ozone team of acro and BASE jump and Ozone paramotor,
the Canarias acro pilots Juan Luis Morales and Renan Morales,
the Renegades, the SAT, the Green brothers ("Acro_twinz"),
the Draco paramotor team, the skydivers of Babylon and Red Bull
teams... With half a hundred of top pilots throwing tricks
around it was difficult to get bored during the day, while at
night we could enjoy an excellent concert of a Cuban band
on Friday and other groups on Thursday and Sunday, in addition
to a massive fireworks show held at Los Realejos
due to the local festivities of the Cross, on Saturday.
New
this year was the premiere of the film by Tim and Anthony
Green, "Lift", that follows the feats
of the twin youngsters at the controls of their Apco gliders in
different flying zones and even while they furtively break in
a skyscraper under construction in Paris to do a ‘rollover’
jump from the top, fly down in between huge buildings and run
away in a scooter through the city – in pure BASE jump style.
The festival also had an official pet, "Flypi" the Canary
bat, who entertained the children after landing on the beach in
a tandem paramotor.
On
the critic’s side we must say that the pilots were far
from happy with the closing of the airspace for two hours
on Sunday noon, just when the conditions finally got perfect
for paragliding after 3 bad days. This was due to the participation
of a military airplane that would release skydivers over
the beach of El Socorro, which somehow was delayed. The pilots
frustration made for a tense wait at takeoff and the practically
unanimous opinion that airplanes (military or not) are
little compatible with a paragliding event like the Flypa.
We hope that the organization will take note on this.
Flypa
08 had a finishing touch on Sunday at the beach, with an impressive
show of paramotors displaying fireworks and lights in the
Canary night by the Draco team (formed by World Champion Ramon
Morillas and members of the Spanish paramotor team). The grand
final came with two of the pilots descending in sats in between
the fire wakes of their mates: a brilliant ending for four
intense days of show and diversion.

soon tell you more about Flypa08 in a full report, stay tuned!

Flypa 07, the big show!
On
April 30th starts the fourth edition of one of the major
festivals dedicated to paragliding in Spain, Flypa 08. This event
brings together the world elite of aerobatics, sky diving, BASE
jump and paramotor, making it one of the most exciting and complete
shows in Europe –topped with an interesting program of concerts,
night parties and fireworks display in Los Realejos, on the north
of Tenerife (Canary). In this video we show you some of the best
images of Flypa 07; maybe this year you will want to see it all
by yourself!
Flight
for Life: Paramotors above the Panama channel
On
May 3rd of 2008, an international group of Powered Paragliders (PPG)
will try to cross from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean flying
over the Panama Canal, in Panama (Central America). The objective
of the ‘Flight for Life’ expedition is to help raise
funds to help a local charity foundation called FANLYC ("Foundation
of Friends of the Children with Leukemia and Cancer"). At the
same time, it will be the first time that paramotors fly above the
Canal and link the two oceans in a non-stop flight. The eight pilots
from 5 countries that will take part in this mission will be paying
for their own expenses, and all donations and sponsorships will
go directly to the FANLYC.
“Local support has been overwhelming from
all sides. The Ultralight Association will be escorting the PPG
pilots and offering air support. Local authorities are offering
ground support and onsite rescue teams. Sponsors for the event
have already shown their interest and have started donations”,
say at Flight for Life.
The cross will not be free from risks as part
of the course will be over water, from Fort Sherman to Gamboa,
during the first part of the flight. “If we happen to water-land
there the access is very difficult for rescue boats due to the
many trees and sticks in the water. It is also a crocodile’s
area, so this is the part that we call exciting", says the
organizer Remy Swaab.

successor of the Mamboo is now certified LTF1-2 in its 4 sizes,
with “remarkable” advantage in performance and improved
handling, according to Nova. The Mentor is a high performance wing
in its class for regularly flying pilots, offering a high level
of safety. The glider comes with thin risers with a Dyneema inlet
and it is made of a lighter cloth (Porcher 45g/sqm on the top surface,
40g/sqm on the bottom surface) with smaller reinforcements, to keep
the weight low.
After
the success of the 1st safety seminar organized by Paramania
(October 2007), they have decided to go for a second edition
on April 26 and 27, in Lamaire, France.
The objective of this “paramotors
safety and advance flying weekend” is to help us all progress
safely whilst improving our flying skills, and all pilots are invited.
Talks will be given in English and French by talented personalities
of our sport, covering subjects that go from the engineering of
our equipment to reading the meteorological conditions, tips on
launch techniques or certification for PPG gliders. During the
weekend there will be reserve packing sessions and the full range
of Paramania gliders available for trying.
The
more experienced pilots will enjoy the Fly Park Arena with several
obstacles and training exercises for them to test flying skills
and practice (inflatable pylons, spot landings, kicking sticks,
etc.)
Chrigel
Maurer beats record of Infinity Tumbling: 155!
The
three times PWC winner has proved that his skills are not limited
to long distance flights, after performing an amazing row of
tumbles above Grindelwald on March 19th, and beating Antoine
Montant's previous mark of 122 (set during St Hilaire's Festival
2007). In a tumbling, the wing shoots forward and passes under
the pilot to then go back over his head (always fully inflated),
while in an infinity the tumbles are linked one after the other
giving the impression that the pilot is jumping rope (feet over
head!) Chrigel used a new acro wing developed by Advance. This
is what he told about the experience:
“The
weather looked perfect, so I packed my new acro glider, just
developed by Thomas Ripplinger, and set off for the Joch. As expected
the wind was perfect there, but I hadn't thought enough about the
temperature – icy cold! My photo equipment felt it as well, and
my camera gave up the ghost after only 4 pictures as I soared past
the Mönch. At least the video camera could stand the cold.
After overflying the Mönch and Eiger I arrived over Grindelwald
at about 1800m. Now I tried to position myself as accurately as
possible over the Grund landing field so that I could use every
inch of altitude. Once you're in the infinity tumbling you can't
adjust the positioning. My longest infinity tumbling (so far) lasted
almost 5 minutes before I stopped over the Grindelwald landing
field!
The
resulting video analysis showed 155 rotations. This corresponds
to a height loss of 12m per somersault. I was ecstatic after
these 155 tumbles, and I'd almost doubled my previous personal
best of 80, from the Schilthorn!”
The
4th edition of the Festival of Los Realejos (Canary Island of
Tenerife, Spain) comes with a program packed with top level air
shows, from April 30th to May 4th, and registration is now open
-as usual, including low-price accommodation in 4 and 5 star
hotels of the area.
After
three years gathering the best aerial displays of the world above
the launch of La Corona and El Socorro beach in the north of
Tenerife, this year the organization will not let down the expectations
for Flypa 08, and some of the most important acrobats of different
disciplines will be there: From the female acro team formed
by Seiko Fukuoka (Japan), Naville Pierre (France) and Maeva Giacometti
(France) to the Aerodyne acro team; or the team Babylon of
skydivers and BASE jumpers, in addition to some "local" talents
like the acro pilots from the neighbouring island of El Hierro,
Juan Luis Morales and Renán Morales, and other known faces
of the Flypa festival, like the Renegades or the Ozone
team of
acro, BASE jump and paramotor – among others.
This
year, the spectacle will be completed with the pyrotechnics display
of the Day of the Crown, a traditional festivity of Los Realejos
that is one of the most impressive fireworks show in Europe –which
participants of Flypa 08 will observe during a special dinner.
The Festival will have the usual nights of concerts and party,
this year with the successful Orishas band (www.orishasthebest.com)
and their special fusion of Cuban music and hip-hop, and a closing
party with live music and a paramotor night show at El Socorro
beach.
Flying
will start, as ever, from the takeoffs of La Corona and Izania
in the National Park of El Teide with its incredible +2200m of
height, and landing at Puerto de la Cruz or El Socorro beach –which
will be the central spot of the festival.
In
order to ensure easy connections between takeoff, landing, hotels
and other places where activities will take place, the organization
will arrange a higher number of buses and special vehicles for
the gliders during the event. Pilots' companions will enjoy special
activities for them, like hiking or speleological expeditions.
The
Flypa festival is certainly one of the most attractive meetings
for free flight lovers on this side of Europe, where not only
you can see in one place some of the best pilots of the world
as they defy gravity but also enjoy the charms of this canary
island in the middle of spring and –of course- fly
as much as you can!
PARA-TEST
working on EN testing system for paramotor gliders
The
EN testing laboratory Para-Test (or ‘Air-Turquoise’),
based in Switzerland, have informed about their work towards a new
testing procedure for powered gliders, which can reflect the special
behaviour these wings have in the air:
“Since
testing paragliders with engine is “forgotten” in the
EN standards (EN 926-1 and EN 926-2), we had to find a way to satisfy
the paramotor society and our customers. We started a co-operation
in March 2008 with DMSV which is accepted by LBA (German government)
for Musterprüfstelle (test laboratory). DMSV, Deutscher Motorschirmverband,
is located not far from Nürnberg in Germany and they are testing
paragliders with engine.
We have competence
to test gliders in free-flight while DMSV have competence to test
with engine; we decided to explore together how we can best test
paramotor gliders. We are still in early phase and we hope we can
start soon to define the tests which are suitable for paramotor
gliders.
Air Turquoise
team are happy to start working with DMSV.”
*Para-Test have
recently introduced their new website, with complete information
about certification procedures and the EN flight test reports in
3 languages (English, French, German).
The
Italian manufacturer presented their new Max 130 and Max 100,
two fully detachable, light and powerful paramotors, according
to Fly Products. Both models use the same central module and engine,
a G24 –Simonini but completely upgraded and equipped with
muffler, carburettor and silencing filter. The difference is the
propeller that can be a carbon three-blade of 130 cm or 100 cm,
offering thrust between 60 and 80 kg. Both models are ready to
mount high or low hang point system, according to the preferences
of the pilot.
Piloting
system with low attachment point Fly
Products developed a system of their own to mount either of the
two hang point systems on all their paramotor models: low or high
hangpoint. To achieve this, the units come with preset attachment
points for the arms. The low hang point system has been improved
with the displacement of the arms front attachment to "remarkably"
reduce the torque effect due to the propeller rotations, according
to Fly Products.
The brand also
introduced a new parachute container to be placed behind the head
of the pilot and said to be safe, practical and removable in 2 minutes.
This container is adaptable to all the models of the detachable
series.
The
Spanish manufacturer are doing the final testing of their first
model powered by a 4-stroke engine, a Bailey 175, which they
plan to fly intensively for 100 hours in different conditions
of temperature, altitude or glider, and by different pilots. The
prototype has a small propeller of 110 cm, "to make
the engine work really hard", according to Clemente Lopez.
"During
the first 6 exhaustive running hours, we were pleasantly surprised
by the low consumption, very little vibrations and the low level
of noise of this motor, together with a very efficient start -
always at the first attempt", he explains.
The
new Clemente 4-stroke will be added to the brand's paramotor
range as soon as it has completed the intended 100 hours of testing "with
no signs of negative results".
Airfer
have released a new medium-size paratrike, developed from their
popular Transam. The Mustang is a light tandem or robust solo
trike, powered by a Hirth F-33 engine with double ignition and
forced cooling.
According to Airfer, with its 30HP they obtain
90Kg of thrust at sea level, which is more than enough for solo
flying -although a bit limited for carrying two large persons.
The Mustang is actually designed for occasional tandem flights,
as Airfer still recommend their well-known Transam for intensive
use.
At Airfer are quite satisfied with the dynamic behaviour and
stability of this new Paratrike, which they describe as "well
balanced and easy to fly".

PMA
and LTF: Paraglider manufacturers aim
at standardizing certification
The
recently created Paraglider Manufacturers Association (PMA),
formed by some thirty well known marks in the world market,
intends to unite positions and work in cooperation to obtain
standard procedures for paraglider certification in order
to offer all pilots uniform safety standards and very clear
information of the test results.
After
the last meetings of the PMA during the Stubai Cup (January)
and with the DHV in December, it was agreed to continue supporting
the existing institutes for paraglider certification (EN, DHV)
and to abstain from self-certification. It was also agreed to
replace the name "DHV" for the paraglider
classes, which refers to the German Association of Hanggliders
and Paragliders (DHV for its acronym in German), for the generic "LTF" in
reference to the German Airworthiness Requirement or “Lufttüchtigkeits";
that is to say, a DHV1 now is "LTF1",
a DHV1-2 is "LTF1-2" and
so on, for the certifications done in Germany. This opens the way
to new Test laboratories to certify gliders in Germany apart from
the DHV.
The
main objective is to standardize the DHV and EN certification procedures,
so that in a future there will be no differences between a glider
certified LTF in Germany and one certified EN in France, for example.
The value of +30 manufacturers who compete with each other sitting
together around a table to work for improving the system tells a
lot of the maturity of the sport and the market, so we can only hope
that these steps lead to the desired results to have better and safer
paragliders
LTF replaces DHV
in paragliders classification The following is the statement by PMA and DHV:
“All
participants of the round-table of 19.12.2007 agree that a new
improved German "Lufttüchtigkeits" (LTF) certification
scheme should be based on the flight test procedures defined in
the EN 926-2 norm. Further to this, it is agreed that the current
tests for spiral dives, and deep collapses need to be improved
upon. Improvements to the EN norm to reflect spiral-dive and deep
collapse testing are also desirable, and change procedures to introduce
these tests to the norm are to be initiated. Should it not be possible
to change the EN norm within the near future, the new LTF certification
may be used in preference. The technical changes to flight test
procedures are to be specified by 01.04.2008, and the full implementation
of the new LTF is planned for 01.09.2008.”

BEFORE the event.
SKY
FIDES 2 Evo The
successor of the FIDES 2 in the beginners class is certified EN-B
(with only one or two Bs in the tests) and it is well suited for
professional schools, according to Sky. The evolution of the FIDES
2 has been redesigned and constructed with new, durable materials,
and it offers high stability specially in rough air, a speed range
from 22 to 45 km/h, easy take-off with no overshooting tendency,
minimum pitching tendency “even when regenerating from massive
collapses”, high efficiency in thermals and very low weight of
the glider –only 4,8 kg for the M size. Available in sizes XXS
to L.
SWING
Stratus 7 and Stratus 7 GS The
Stratus 7 GS is the certified version of the competition
wing from Swing, and it has recently passed DHV2-3
in sizes 22 and 24. The GS is based in the Stratus
7, a new wing easier to fly than the Stratus 6 which
offers improved climb performance, glide up to 55 km/h,
lower control pressure, simplified centering in thermals
and more fun to fly, and “good-natured behaviour in
extreme flying”. Unlike the DHV version, the Stratus
7 GS, the acceleration distance was lengthened and
the weight range was increased somewhat in the open
class.
UP
Summit XC This
new DHV2 glider combines great passive safety with total flying
pleasure, according to UP. With characteristics taken from their
DHV2-3 model Trango 3 and aspect ratio of 5,95, at UP say the Summit
XC has a clean and solid canopy, and mild reactions to collapses,
combined with high performance comparable to higher-class wings.
Trim speed is 38 km/h and max speed 52km/h, according to the manufacturer.
It is a perfect glider both for experienced pilots and those stepping
up from a DHV1-2 glider. Available in 4 sizes.
Gin
BeCool The new Gin tandem glider is made for professional pilots. Certified LTF / DHV
1-2 and EN-B it is defined as a simple wing giving smooth dynamic handling,
easy and precise in the turn, a thermal grabber and very efficient. Other features
include trim risers, larger surface area than the ‘Beetle', certified wide weight
range, light inflation for easy launch in all conditions, and light brake pressure.
Available in 2 sizes, 39 & 42.
Gin
Boomerang 5 – 2008 version Gin
have improved their competition machine for the 2008 season,
with new risers and lines that can be adapted for the 2007
version (available from Gin dealers). According to Gin, the
overall performance of this upgraded version is much better,
with improved handling performance and more efficiency in thermals,
a higher accelerated speed, and better sinkrate and stability
at high speeds.
Airwave
SPORT 4 Introduced
as a very safe, medium skill 1-2 glider –also certified
EN-B– the 4th generation of the Sport uses new technology
from their World Champion wing which translates in “significantly
higher performance”. According to Airwave, the Sport
4 has improved pitch and roll stability which make the
extra performance easy to use. The glider has 52 cells,
3 risers and an aspect ratio of 5,35. The Sport 4 is
available in sizes S to XL.
Skywalk
TEQUILA2 The
new Tequila is defined as a glider “for the broadest
range of pilots”. Compared to the Tequila 1, it has increased
speed potential and markedly improved glide during operation
of the speed system, also against the wind. The Tequila
2 also uses the brand's Jet Flap Technology –which helps
obtain a very low minimum speed (21km/h)- and among
its characteristics the manufacturer mentions direct
handling, “excellent” take-off properties, reassuring
safety reserves, and low total weight. Available in sizes
XS to XL.
One
year before the Paragliding World Championship, the Open of Valle
de Bravo has been a great opportunity for nearly 150 pilots from
different countries to taste the zone of Valle de Bravo and train
in their famous strong thermal conditions. After the successful
Monarca Cup, held in the same site on the previous week, the Pre-Worlds
also enjoyed a very favourable meteo that allowed for 6 consistent
tasks of between 60 and 100 km. The Slovenian brothers Urban and
Aljaz Valic disputed the leadership of the championship from the
first day, alternating themselves on the first place until the last
days when some bad decisions put doubts on their permanence on it.
But finally Urban Valic (Mac Para Magus 5) took the first position,
followed by his brother Aljaz (Mac Para Magus 5) and the Portuguese
Nuno Virgilio (Axispara Mercury) in 3rd place. By countries, the
winner was the United States that counted on the biggest delegation
and with pilots who played with some advantage as many of them usually
spend their winters in Valle.
The Mexican organization was able to show the world
that Valle de Bravo is up to the task of managing a top level championship
and that everything there is ready to receive the national teams
that will dispute the next 11th FAI Paragliding World Championship,
from the 23 of January to the 7 of February of 2009.
The
major annual paramotor rendezvous in Spain, Las Candelas,
did not disappoint on its 12th edition. After an interesting
prelude oriented to the most specialized sector of the community,
with 2 days of talks and debates about the situation of the sport
in Spain and Europe, Las Candelas opened its doors on Saturday
2 of February just when the fog cleared to offer a brilliant
day of flying.
The commercial Fair grew bigger this year to comfortably accommodate
the Spanish PPG manufacturers (Pap, Clemente, H-E, Airfer, Kobrappg...)
as well as the main dealers of flying equipment. Under the big
tent we could see the different new features introduced on the
flying machines by the manufacturers for this year. Here is a
brief summary of them: Airfer brought a new 4-stroke
engine for
a tandem or solo trike, called "Fort-T 400", on which
they are still working but plan to release soon; H-E presented
a new modular paramotor kit fully disassembled
in many parts (made of aluminum or steel); PAP have
their new reinforced aluminium
arms, tested and certified to bear even acrobatic
manoeuvres;
and Clemente have improved their trike Securemax
and presented a new throttle for their range.
At
Las Candelas was the official introduction of the new manufacturer
Kobrappg (see previous note lower on this page)
and their units powered by Sky 100 water-cooled engines and the
most powerful Simonini, with a throttle of original design. Kasana,
dealer of Fly Products paramotors, gave dozens
of tandem flights with the Eco2 trike and presented new colors
on the cages, and also some modifications in the low hangpoint
system of their range.
Dani Martinez with his new company Olivair introduced
in Spain the light Italian paramotor Miniplane –by
'Per il Volo', manufacturer of the successful engine Top 80– which
weights only 18.5
kg.
With them was Pascal Campbell-Jones representing the paraglider
manufacturer Paramania, and we also saw Mateo
Vitorazzi, who came from Italy to support the brands that use Vitorazzi engines
in their units, like Airfer or Pap. Regarding new gliders, we
could give a go to the new Naja from Powerplay,
oriented to intermediate pilots and with a wider range of speeds,
and the new Velvet
from Mac Para, a semi-reflex model specially developed
for powered flight (our impressions soon, here).
Among
the more than hundred pilots participating were some mebers of
the Spanish Team, including the three world champions Ramon
Morillas, Daniel Crespo and Nino Muelas; a group of members of
the British club Lemmings –who come every year
to Las Candelas- and their national champion Michel Carnet, as
well as pilots from Portugal, France, Greece or the Czech Republic,
and journalists from international magazines like Aerial, Paramotor
Magazine or Parapente Mag.
This
year we had plenty of flying, with superb conditions on Saturday
and a number of pilots launching in original disguises. There was
a remarkable effort from the organization to keep maximum security
and control at the takeoff and landing zones, were things ran smoothly
and free of incidents. Sunday started overcast and with some water
drops but the window opened by 11 am and people could fly until
nearly 3 pm, when everybody started to leave.
In
our opinion it has been one of best editions of this event, thanks
to the interest from the organizers to go further than just the
paramotor event and become the meeting point for different ideas
and perspectives, promoting the sport, and offering the best environment
for a positive encounter of manufacturers, dealers and PPG
lovers, so that Paramotor continues growing and improving.
We
will give you more details soon, here...

Tasks on Monarca Paragliding Cup
Foto: Silvio Zugarini
Posted: January 29th, 2008
The
classic Monarca Cup was a good training for the Pre-Worlds competition
that is now being held at Valle de Bravo, Mexico, with 145
pilots competing.
From Jan.20 to 25,
Valle provided good flying conditions -if a bit less strong and
with lower cloudbases than in previous years- that allowed for
6 valid tasks and the 1st place for Venezuelan pilot Michael
Van Wachter, one of the pioneers of competition paragliding
in his country and a “legend” for many, who seems to
be back in the competition scene in very good shape. US
pilots Eric Reed and Matt Beechinor took
2nd and 3rd, ahead of Carlos
Daniel Gomez (Ven, 4th) and the brothers Urban
(5th) and Aljaz Valic (6th), who were
not so regular this time (Aljaz lost the overall lead by landing
out on the last task). The tasks ranged from 60 to 83
km and
were well set, according to the pilots. A few reserve deployments
and at least one accident during the event show that Valle can
offer great flying conditions, but it can also be rough at times.
Pilots report that the comp was very well organized, and that
nothing of the local conflicts that we have heard about in the
last months could be seen there.
*Many
of the participants of the Monarca stayed at Valle to compete
in the Pre-Worlds, which will conclude this Saturday 2nd of February.
The
new big hit on the alpine ski tracks, speed-riding, combines
the basic ingredients to attract the attention: speed, adrenalin,
risk... "Play Gravity" is a new video that takes
a closer look at the feats and possibilities that the small
speedflying gliders and steep snow-covered slopes, among other
games with wings and boards, can offer for playing with the
gravity, and does it in an extremely clean and professional
way. Play Gravity features the acro pilot and star of the new
sport, Mathias Rotten (known for flying his glider hooked backwards),
together with other exceptional riders, BASE jumpers, acrobats
and snow-boarders.
With
spectacular sequences filmed from helicopters, ground and the
helmets of the riders, in stunning locations in Switzerland,
France and Alaska, the film takes us to the world of pure
speed and vertigo, where nothing else matters but to fly just
centimetres above sharpen rocks to then continue sliding down
on powder snow in a frenetic descent. Or to make a glider pass
almost too close to the face and camera of the partner during
an Infinite tumbling;
or defy the gravity and mountains armed with wingsuits and small
parachutes... Resources do not seem to have been spared in this
production, in which you will see exciting images of paragliding,
speed-riding, snowboard and BASE jumping, with an important
part dedicated to the speedflying descent from 3 of the most impressive
alpine peaks on the same day: Eiger (3970m), Monch (4107m)
and
Jungfrau (4158m). The sequences are alternated
with explanations of the own sportsmen on what they will do, the
difficulties they must solve, and also on their addiction to these
risky games (in German; subtitles available in English only).
The
video is filmed in high resolution which, together with a neat
edition that takes the best from each angle, allows us to enjoy
the trip during the 52 minutes of the film.
It is one of the most interesting videos than we’ve watched
during the last year and we highly recommended it.
With
2008 has started the new venture run by Dani Martinez (Paramania
test-pilot) together with Arturo Barcena, organizer
of a popular PPG event in Jaen, Andalusia. Olivair is a company
that offers services related to air sports and
adventure tourism, from paramotor courses to guided routes and
tandem flights. But the most original one is the 'rent-a-paramotor' service,
specially created for pilots coming from zones less favoured
by the weather conditions. At their headquarters in Beas de Segura,
one of the sites of Spain with the most flyable days along the
year, pilots can come with just the glider and hire one of the
15 paramotor units available from Olivair. Then,
they can launch from the tracks of the Cornicabral aerodrome
and pay just for the hours flown. The reference prices start
from around 40 euros an hour for paramotors Miniplane,
Pap and Fly Products, with deals for
hiring packs of 5, 10, 15 or 20 hours, or for groups. Olivair
also plan to bring their fleet of paramotors and trikes for rent
to certain events, which will indeed be a good
option in case a pilot breaks a prop or his / her paramotor –so
as not to miss a flying day! We will see this "rent-a-paramotor" service
for the first time in Las Candelasmeeting, on February
2 and 3 (see note below).
According
to Dani, this service aims at helping increase the airtime for
foreign pilots, who now can fly to the south of Spain any weekend
with low-cost airlines –without the hassle of carrying their
own paramotor– instead of staying at home watching the rain through
the window...
The last was a fantastic flying weekend at home (sunny and warm,
nearly 20ºC!) and we had the chance to see and fly the new
creature from the novel Spanish paramotor manufacturer KobraPPG.
These guys aim at producing top-end quality machines that are not
only nice to fly but also nice to see on the ground. Their first
model has been called “Snake” and mounts
a Sky 100 engine water-cooled,
with a 3-blades carbon propeller. According to the manufacturer,
this paramotor offers 63 kg of thrust for a unit
that weights 26 kg (empty). The arms, of an original
Kobrappg design, are made of aluminium (AVIONAL 2017/T6) and have
6 choices of hang-point for different pilots’ weights. On
the ground it feels comfortable on the back and it is very easy
to pull-start it, with the starter handle on the shoulder. Not very
noisy, the sound and vibrations are more acute than what we are
used to (with motors of similar power). The best:
It has linear delivery of power, easy to regulate with a soft and
sensitive throttle –a bit too soft for my taste perhaps- comfortable
to use. In the air it is precise for ground skimming and has more
than enough power for nearly 100 kg of pilot on
a glider Paramania Action GT 28.
As for the details, many and good ones except maybe for the harness
straps which would not stay on place and forced me to set them again.
In any case, the whole unit is well constructed and finished. The
engine cooled by water looks attractive and comes with some pieces
anodized in a characteristic green colour that turn it into an exclusive
article.
In general, it seems to be a very interesting new product to battle
in the competitive Spanish and European market. This is the first
model produced by KobraPPG and it (and the brand) will
be officially introduced at Las Candelas(see
note below).
*Their website will be up with more info soon on www.kobrappg.com

PAP:
NEW ALUMINUM ARMS.
In
their continuous evolution of the chassis to provide better
comfort and security, PAP now incorporates new arms made of
an aluminum alloy 7070 (T 7451), stronger and certified by the
German organization DULV for paramotor. In these new arms, the
fixation of the ring to the harness has been adapted so that
the seam goes straight and offers more resistance. The welded
shackles are gone. All the PAP paramotors manufactured this
year will come with the new arms, and they are also available
as an upgrade for previous PAP models, to which they can be
easily fitted. We’ll see them closely at
Las Candelas (see note below), stay tuned…
With some delay, we finally put together a video
of the Worlds with some of the best flying images taken in China:
above the Great Wall or the Ming Tombs. Enjoy!
The
most popular meeting for paramotor lovers in Spain will be back
for its 12th edition on February 2 and 3, near the town of La
Puebla de los Infantes (Sevilla, Andalusia).
This year there
won't be a competition running during the event, like in previous
years, but there will be a flying costumes contest with
prizes for the most original outfit -capable of taking off and landing
with his/her owner (it will be carnival time in Spain!).
Some days
before the meeting there will be some workshops where expert personalities
of the sport will talk and reflect on the position of Paramotoring
both in Spain and Europe, the norms that rule the activity and the
future of it.
The commercial
fair of Las Candelas is usually the place where
paramotor manufacturers release their latest developments for the
new season, so we can expect to see thereall the new machines and
ideas brewed in the Spanish factories during the last months.
As every year, La Puebla de Los Infantes will warm us up by night
with huge bonfires and parties on the streets of the village. Hopefully,
it will offer us some good flying conditions as well!

you're coming from abroad and don't want to travel with your
motor on, check out the rent-a-paramotor service offered by Dani
Martinez and his new venture Olivair: www.olivair.es/eng
On
27th November 2007, Des Pansi
set a new national female record of open distance
after flying from De Aar to Plooysburg, a distance
of 186km. Des –a local pilot, instructor
at Fly De Aar paragliding school and co-owner of “Potties
B&B” at the famous XC site– broke her own
previous record of 154km. She was flying a Swing Astral
5.22. It was a slow day with a light basewind, so she had
to fly for almost 7 ½ hours. “It was
slow, very difficult in the beginning with lots of low saves, nice
big climbs later on when it warmed up, easy if you stayed high but
hard work if you got low”. The longest distance flown by a
woman in South Africa is 300 km by Ewa Wisnierska (DE),
some weeks ago.
