The European Champions 2006 are Luca Donini from Italy and Petra Krausova from the Czech Republic.
After a fierce competition where we could see not only some of the best pilots of the moment but also the fastest race machines that the designers produced this year, it is clear that these are two very special and talented pilots.
The best European pilots also have gold medals of world championships, and have been members of their national teams in a number of competitions.
In the last Europeans, Italy was 2nd by nations and the Czechs were 3rd.
These are the first impressions we got from Luca and Petra, the new champs, right after receiving their titles in Morzine, France.

Luca Donini,European Champion 2006:
“Victory comes from determination!”

3rd task: First in the goal of Les Gets, after an excitingly fast last glide racing against Urban Valic

Team spirit: Luca congratulates a team mate at goal. He's been in the Italian PG Team many times, adding good results to one of the best nations in the sport.

A discrete, rather silent person, Luca (43) came to these Europeans without any significant training (or so he says) but with a strong determination to win – the same willpower that took him to the top of the Worlds podium in 2001 becoming the biggest surprise of a hard fought competition, as nobody knew him! Back then he was already flying a Gradient Avax.
Luca is seen only ocasionally at top level comps but he's now known as a very efficient and fast pilot. If he's around, anything could happen… and in Morzine he showed that he just does not need to be competing often to keep his skills in the best of shapes.
A mystery for those who fly and compete as much as they can, and still couldn't beat him!
This short interview was done after the prize giving ceremony (many thanks to the translator, Jimmy Pacher).

Luca, how do you feel?

Felice! Happy!

What was the best moment of the championship for you?

On the last task, when I surpassed Christian Maurer and could be the first in goal. I felt great!

Tell me about your glider, the Gradient Avax prototype. What's your main advantage with it?

It's a very fast glider. Maybe the Gin Boomerang and Advance Omega protos have a better glide ratio at speed but I can go faster at full speedbar, so for the final glide I can do a very fast last sprint even if I sink a bit more. In a 2km glide I lost 400m of altitude but I won for 400m over the second! My glider (Avax SR7) is a prototype for developing the serial new Avax.

You don't seem to compete much. Do you plan to participate in other championships?

This is my last European Championship. I have a job that does not give me much time for flying in summer, I work in tourism and summer is the high season. So I'll go to the Worlds in Manilla because it's in my off-season, but I have too much work in summer.

Luca, what's your training, how do you manage to fly so well?
(Jimmy laughs and says: “He doesn't even know himself!” Luca shrugs his shoulders).

It's not training, it's determination! And I could not do this without the support of my wife. I dedicate this medal to her, the love of my life, Elizabetha.

Petra Krausova, European Female Champion:
“I just like paragliding too much!”

The reigning Queen of Paragliding kept the European title after a prolific year in which she not only managed to stand on podiums of almost every competition in which participated, but also to set two new amazing world records: 247,7km declared distance and 302,9km straight distance. Still, she was really excited to add a second European gold medal to her large collection of trophies, and could not restrain herself from running and jumping on her way to the podium where she climbed before being asked to and after kissing each of the 9 women that were below her in the Europeans ranking. A happy queen who's been competing for 12 years and now admits to be looking forward for a new chapter in her life, in which paragliding will be less predominant – only she doesn't know how to start!

An obvious question, Petra , how do you feel?

Happy!

What was your best moment during the competition?

When I flew over the goal line on the last task, at Samoens. I knew I was the 1 st and I knew I had won!

Was there a "worst moment"?

Yes, when Martin (Orlik) broke his leg. He is always the pilot with better results in the Czech team, he's always scoring for the team and we didn't have him during the Europeans. But we did well and we got the 3rd place; I'm very happy with it.

There are very good pilots in the Czech Republic, how do you explain that?

I think it's because we push each other a lot. Some of the best pilots are from the same city so they fly together a lot and are always pushing the others.

What can you tell me about your new Mac Para Magus proto?

It's faster. It has very good performance for a small glider; it flies just like the big sizes, which is always difficult to obtain from the size of glider I fly. But this one flies really well and I'm really happy about it.

You've won all the main titles, broke world records… What now?

It's hard to say. I've been trying to put flying aside so I could prepare for a new life, you know, maybe start a family life, have children… But I can't! I just like flying too much!

I read that you had promised your boyfriend to marry him after you'd broken a world record... Are you getting married?

Well, my boyfriend went to the city hall office to ask for a date for the marriage but it was closed, and then he didn't try again… And I did not insist...! (Laughs)

'Goddesses' of Paragliding: Petra and Louise Crandal (who did not compete this time) are the two women with more titles in our sport. They are good friends too.
